چکیده

The IBEX Background Monitor (IBaM) provides a small and lightweight method for independently measuring IBEX’s high-energy proton background, by integrating the flux of > ~ 14 keV protons over a ~7o conical FOV. The IBaM is part of the IBEX-Hi sensor and has a co-aligned look direction. This paper describes the principle of the IBaM and details its design and responses. In particular, we show the response of major components to both ions and ultraviolet (UV) light background. We also provide the geometric factor and calculate expected count rates.

Foraging ecology of three sympatric ungulate species – Behavioural and resource maps indicate differences between chamois, ibex and red deer

BACKGROUND The spatial distribution of forage resources is a major driver of animal movement patterns. Understanding where animals forage is important for the conservation of multi-species communities, since interspecific competition can emerge if different species use the same depletable resources. However, determining forage resources in a spatially continuous fashion in alpine grasslands at ...

Epizootiologic investigations of selected abortive agents in free-ranging Alpine ibex (Capra ibex ibex) in Switzerland.

In the early 2000s, several colonies of Alpine ibex (Capra ibex ibex) in Switzerland ceased growing or began to decrease. Reproductive problems due to infections with abortive agents might have negatively affected recruitment. We assessed the presence of selected agents of abortion in Alpine ibex by serologic, molecular, and culture techniques and evaluated whether infection with these agents m...

Population genomics analyses of European ibex species show lower diversity and higher inbreeding in reintroduced populations

Restoration of lost species ranges to their native distribution is key for the survival of endangered species. However, reintroductions often fail and long-term genetic consequences are poorly understood. Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) are wild goats that recovered from <100 individuals to ~50,000 within a century by population reintroductions. We analyzed the population genomic consequences of the A...

HELIOSPHERIC NEUTRAL ATOM SPECTRA BETWEEN 0.01 AND 6 keV FROM IBEX

Since 2008 December, the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) has been making detailed observations of neutrals from the boundaries of the heliosphere using two neutral atom cameras with overlapping energy ranges. The unexpected, yet defining feature discovered by IBEX is a Ribbon that extends over the energy range from about 0.2 to 6 keV. This Ribbon is superposed on a more uniform, globally ...

Some thoughts on ibex on plinths in early South Arabian art

Introduction One of the best known iconographic elements of South Arabia is undoubtedly the ibex. The frequency with which this animal appeared is due both to the highly symbolic value it enjoyed with respect to the pantheon of South Arabian divinities (1), and to its inherent qualities—lithe body, lightness of movement and curved horns—which made it particularly suited to artistic reproduction...
